Why Is Goal Setting Important to You? By Rusty O’Connor
Goal setting is a pivotal component to achieving both success and happiness in your life. It has the ability to turn your dreams into reality and for you to achieve things that you, and everyone around you, never thought was possible.
Yes goals can indeed make you successful and happy. However, before starting on the road to success, there is one overarching question that must first be answered. Without this, there is a slim chance that you will actually achieve your goal. The question is:
“Why do you want to achieve the goal?”
This simple question, and the answer that you provide, will help determine your level of success, and if you will achieve the goal at all. The answer will also help you to define what is important to you, and more importantly, will help you keep going when things get tough.
The answer you provide needs to be more than just a simple “cause it will feel good” or “cause I’ve always wanted a red Ferrari!” To be useful your answer needs to be detailed and provide a list of specific reasons why you want to achieve the goal.
To provide an example, one of my goals for 2012 is to increase my online revenue to $60,000 per month. The reasons I want to do this are as follows:
- Completely pay off a house
- Help people and charities
- Spend quality time with my wife and four children and take them on several holidays (by the way our favourite destination is Hau Hin in Thailand)
- Choose what work I undertake.
These reasons have a lot of meaning to me, and I have a range of images I place around my work area to remind my why they are important.
The challenge for you, dear reader, is to write down why you want to achieve each and every one of your goals. This will help you gain clear direction on why the goal is important, and will keep you going when things get tough. Here’s to your goal setting success.
